Mateo “The Beast” Cota is the youngest of our three boys. 11 days prior to his second birthday, and after what seemed like dozens of visits to the doctor/E.R., our beast was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. As difficult as this diagnosis was, we were relieved to finally find out what was ailing him. We knew that our lives had been changed forever and were certain that God’s plan included us getting through this.
Little did we know at the time, that part of this plan included treatment that would last about 3 1/2 years. Being that we are from the Central Coast, and that the nearest approved children’s hospital is in
Los Angeles, we soon realized that a tremendous amount of driving was in our future, as well. We would, however, drive to the end of the world daily to get him the care he needs. It is, after all, a small price to pay in the end!!
As long and daunting as this seems, we are determined to make the best of this situation and blessed to have many people on Team Mateo. We also count it as a blessing to be making so many meaningful relationships along this journey. It is our belief that Mateo’s pain will not be wasted. We take comfort in knowing that good will from this and look forward to the day that his treatment ends… December 23, 2016.
